#167 Write a Press Release

write_a_press_release

When I first started penning my neverendinglist, it’s fair to say that I never imagined I’d need to write a Press Release promoting my exploits. The List, as I often point out is the ‘Script for Life’ documenting my ‘Journey of Happiness’ (happiness is a journey and not a destination by the way!). This journey has in turn turned into an adventure and after starting 2014 with a UK Blog Award nomination I’ve only gone and made the shortlist for the awards ceremony down in London and now it’s time for self promotion!

Now I’m no journalist, but thinking swiftly back to my days at school, I’m all too aware that some method is needed before madness ensues, but what are the key ingredients for a good Press Release?! There are a plethora of press release pointers out there, but much like my very self, I decided to keep it simple and just go for the five ‘W’ approach to it. What? Where? When? Who? and Why?

So here it is in all it’s glory, my very first Press Release and a piece of writing which it’s fair to say makes for interesting reading!

PRESS RELEASE

 February 2014 – Immediate Release

Wrexham man shortlisted for National UK Blog Award1

Neil Wyn-Jones, a 39 year old from Wrexham, has made it through a public vote and is now shortlisted for a National Blog Award in recognition of his online blog the neverendinglist (www.neverendinglist.com). Neil started penning his bucket list style blog two years ago to tackle the onset of a midlife crisis head on and sees the list as a script for his life, as he tries to lead by example to his young family whilst accepting the looming milestone of his 40th year. It is a journey that has seen him run marathons, become both a featured writer and photographer, compete at the World Bog Snorkelling Championships and be rescued by a lifeboat! After recently being featured by global software company Pixlr and appearing in the February issue of Runners World, Neil has some ambitious targets to tick off his list including winning a bodybuilding competition, getting a recipe published and appearing on the front cover of GQ magazine! Following his mantra of dreaming big, he still hasn’t ruled out an attempt to take over as the next James Bond once Daniel Craig hangs up his trunks.

“I can’t believe I’m actually up for a National Award like this and I’m very excited to be attending the awards evening down in London” said Neil speaking after finding out about being shortlisted. “I started the blog to document some of the daydreams and challenges we have in our head, but slowly these dreams are becoming reality as I write my script for life, I feel honoured to be recognised and appreciated for my random ramblings!”

The inaugural National Blog Awards 2014 have been called the Oscars of the blogging world and the awards ceremony is to be held on the 25th April 2014 in London. Neil is nominated in the ‘Most Innovative Blog’ category and hopes to bring the prestigious award back to his hometown in Wrexham.

Notes for Editors

1.         The National UK Blog Awards 2014 are the only Blog Awards recognising a multitude of industry professional talent across the UK.

It appears the Daily Post know a good story (and well written Press Release) when they see one and they kindly put my random ramblings into print and online this week, as can be seen here. Now hopefully I can bring home the proverbial bacon in April! Perhaps my story really is worth reading and if I keep this up I might have to start penning the autobiography next! #333 – Write an Autobiography added to the List.
